The smishing wave, decoded
- ▸The pattern: a text or email claims an unpaid toll, ticket, or DMV fee, threatens license suspension or late penalties within hours, and links to a payment page that imitates an official site.
- ▸Real Florida citations arrive on paper at the stop or by mail from the court or agency — and the payable amount, county, and citation number are printed on them.
- ▸The clerk of the county on the citation is the payment authority for court-payable tickets; the registry on this page lists every clerk's official site from the clerks' own association directory.
- ▸If a message pressures you to pay through its own link, close it and open your clerk's site yourself. Forward scam texts to 7726 (SPAM), and report at reportfraud.ftc.gov and ic3.gov.
- ▸Never enter card details into a link from a text or email — no clerk collects by gift card, crypto, or peer-to-peer transfer, ever.
